An ANC Commissioner’s job is to solicit constituents’ opinions and desires and then to represent those opinions and desires to the City. ANC commissioners should seek to represent residents, not act on their own strong beliefs or as the long arm of the Mayor.
The ANC is not an agency of the executive branch; the commissioners are not enforcers of the Mayor’s policies. By statute, representing the community to the executive and legislative branches, not the other way around, is the responsibility of the ANC. It is also the body’s moral obligation in a representative democracy.
By law, the District of Columbia is required to give “great weight” to the opinions of our ANC when the City makes decisions that will affect us residents.
Chevy Chase has seven ANC Commissioners, one for each of seven single-member districts (SMDs), each representing approximately 2,000 residents. Commissioners are elected for two-year terms without pay.
