DC is big on local control and democracy — that’s what the DC Statehood movement is all about. When it comes to DC’s neighborhoods, however, “local control” and democracy are strikingly absent.
Over the past few years in Chevy Chase, many ANC Commissioners and some other elected officials, including the Mayor — heavily influenced by special interest groups and real estate developers — have supplanted and usurped the will of the people who live here. Instead of doing the will of the people, they’re doing their own will.
Have you ever met your ANC representative? Has he ever contacted you to ask your opinion on the many pressing challenges Chevy Chase is facing?
If you have communicated your opinions to your ANC commissioner did he adequately represent your views? Or did he ignore you and your neighbors and, instead, vote to satisfy his own personal opinions?
I’ve sat in on dozens of ANC meetings over the past few years and have watched our ANC ignore and/or vote against the will of their own constituents time and time again.
A recent and egregious example of this is our ANC’s several-year-long refusal to poll residents, and then accept and act on the results of a survey that, in 2023, was finally sent to every household in Chevy Chase.
Bring democracy back to Chevy Chase! Take back your ANC!
